Metro Vancouver Organics Ban January 2015
No organics will be accepted in any garbage or trash bins in Metro Vancouver effective January 1, 2015.
Why is this ban being implemented?
- Part of Metro Vancouver's Greenest City Initiative focusing on carbon, waste, and our ecosystem
- Organics are a recoverable resource with a multitude of uses for the resulting compost
- Considerations for landfill space and production of greenhouse gases
Who is affected?
- Industrial, commercial, institutional
- Residential, businesses...everyone in the Lower Mainland!
How will this affect you?
- Fines for offending haulers, stratas and customers
- Garbage containing too much organic material
- Contaminated organics (recyclables, trash)
Prepare Yourself
Why can’t I use biodegradeable or regular plastic?
- IT WILL NOT COMPOST
- Contamination of feedstock and final product
Why do I care if it will compost or not
- Promote sustainability in your home and reduce your carbon footprint
- Incoming loads will be inspected and upon being deemed “contaminated”, the hauler will be fined and pass this cost on to their stratas and customers
- Cost-effective because organics pickup costs less than garbage disposal
